Dr. Colvard Returns From His Most Recent Mission in Africa - One Patient's Story

For years, Mathlia Angola had lived her life in a world of darkness, unable to see well enough to leave her hut or eat without assistance. When she visited Dr. Colvard at one of his clinics in Nambia, she told him, through a translator, that she had talked with God and told Him that she would be thankful, if He would allow her to see the sky just once more in her lifetime.

The morning after her surgery when the patches were removed from her eyes, her face brightened as she saw clearly for the first time in over a decade. As soon as the doctors and nurses left her hospital room, she ran into the courtyard, looked up at the sky, raised her hands in praise and danced. Several hours later, this remarkable photograph was taken by Dr. Marcus Ottomian, a young surgeon in training from Britain, who was visiting with Dr. Colvard. Sitting quietly, as the light diffused into her window, she continues to marvel at the beauty of the clouds and blue sky outside her room.

Dr. Colvard is the Medical Director of the Friends of Vision Foundation. For the past seventeen years this organization has helped provide eye care and other services to thousands of indigent patients, orphans, and disabled children in some of the poorest regions of the world.
